At VNA, we use evidenced based rehabilitation programs to help improve patient’s voice quality as well as their balance and motor control.
When an individual develops Parkinson’s disease or another neurological condition, the effects can quickly diminish their quality of life. The LSVT® program and rehabilitation team at VNA Home Health follow two nationally recognized programs which are backed by the National Institutes of Health-funded research: LSVT LOUD® and LSVT BIG®. These evidenced based rehabilitation programs help improve the patients’ voice quality as well as their balance and motor control.

LSVT LOUD
Virtually every person with Parkinson’s disease will develop problems with speech that start early in the disease process. Medicine and neurosurgery typically don’t help speech disorders. The most effective way to improve speech is through speech therapy. The LSVT LOUD® program named for Mrs. Lee Silverman (Lee Silverman Voice Treatment) was developed in 1987 and has been scientifically studied for nearly 20 years. Focused on a single goal “speak LOUD!” the treatment does not train people for shouting or yelling; rather LSVT LOUD® uses loudness training to bring the voice to an improved healthy vocal loudness with no strain.

LSVT BIG
The principles of LSVT LOUD® were applied to limb movement and have been documented to be effective in patients’ diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. This protocol was developed specifically to address the patients’ unique movement impairments through many repetitions of core movements that are used in daily living. Initiating the LSVT BIG® program early in disease progress has the greatest impact on the quality of life but can be started at any time with a referral to the program from a physician.
