Speech Therapy

Speech therapy helps patients regain the basics of speaking along with evaluating and treating conditions that affect other areas such as chewing, swallowing, processing and more.

Individualized plans for regaining speech

Our speech therapists use a variety of exercises and tools to help patients regain speech abilities along with other conditions that affect chewing, swallowing, and memory among other areas. Following an individualized plan, therapists will address each patient’s unique needs with care.

How Speech Therapy supports aging adults

Throughout our lives, our bodies change and adapt, which can affect speech, hearing and language production.

Weakened vocal cords

Over time, vocal cords may weaken, affecting the volume we are able to speak at and sometimes causing a hoarseness in our tone. Our therapists work with patients to produce a clear, strong voice with good projection.

Articulation

Articulation can affect the way we pronounce certain sounds, making some words difficult to say. Patients who have suffered a stroke, have Parkinson’s Disease or have Multiple Sclerosis often have difficulty with articulation.

Cognitive function

Due to hearing loss, cognitive decline or dementia, patients may experience change in cognitive function over time, which can impact the ability to understand and use language.

Swallowing

In addition to verbal issues, some individuals, especially those who have disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease or Multiple Sclerosis may have difficulty swallowing. Speech Therapy can work with the muscles used for swallowing and may help improve it.
